I am an atheist and I support equal rights. Earlier this year in Ireland, we had a referendum on same-sex marriage and there were posters all over the country from both parties. I supported the Yes side, but when I saw the No posters, I was sickened. They claimed that children need a mother and a father and used this as an excuse to vote no. I badly wanted to deface these posters with gay sex jokes to piss off the No voters and get people to vote Yes, but I just suppressed that urge and voted Yes like a decent human being. I believe you don’t have to be different sexes to be parents and that children have a right to love and a family. Sure enough, the referendum passed and the Republic of Ireland made history as the first country to legalise same-sex marriage through public vote.
